50 Dresses, 1950s Dress, Vintage Clothing & Dresses
50s dresses were dresses that were first worn by women in the 1950s… funnily enough! And some of the cutest dresses, the 50s dresses that we are so in love with now…were actually worn by that domestic goddess – the 50s housewife. These women cooked and cleaned and dedicated their entire lives to maintaining a spotless house and a happy home. She wasn’t expected to have a job; her ‘job’ was to look after her husband and family and keep perfect harmony – and all with a cheery smile and a beautifully make-upped face.
The 50s dresses worn by these fabulously wholesome housewives were always crisp, pretty and fresh, so when hubby arrived home, she would be there waiting to greet him. Her hair smooth and combed back, or perhaps up in a neat little bun… depending on hubby’s preference of course! Her 50s dress neat and straight – the apron was whipped off just in the nick of time before hubby stepped through the door… oops we don’t want to get into trouble now, do we! And there she is in her beautiful 50s dress, looking a little like Mrs C. from Happy Days – but didn’t we all wish our mums were more like her?
The beauty of 50s dresses was that they looked so feminine and pretty. If the housewife of the 50s felt a little down, or a little lost in the sexist prison that had become her life… she would pop on a nicely ironed flowery frock and all would be right with the world. Well, even if it wasn’t, at least she looked like it was. And anyway, she would never complain or worry her husband with such petty whimsy as her own feelings – that would make her selfish and weak. Now back to the kitchen and make dinner you naughty little 1950s girl!
Wearing 50s dresses in the kitchen was compulsory back then… in the 1950s. And with accompanying high heels, it was the expected attire for producing an effortless roast chicken meal with the perfect apple pie and custard waiting in the wings (by the batches of homemade cookies you baked that day) to top it all off. You deserve a nice little peck on the cheek for all your hard work…only if your husband feels like it, that is. And my, what a lovely 50s dress you have on.
Lovely 50s dresses indeed! Back then the women were the pivotal point of the family unit. They devoted all of their day to the smooth running of the household routine. And to keep her man, the master of the 1950s house – happy. All that responsibility and looking so wonderfully glamorous while she did it. Or you might even say… all dolled up and nowhere to go?
