Beater Top, Corset Back Top, Corset Tops
So what the hell is a Full Back Corset Beater top anyway??? Well, there are two words that give you the vital clues for definition of this very interesting piece of clothing – CORSET and BEATER.
So firstly, what’s a Beater Top? I love talking about Wife Beater tops as a lot of people get all ‘shirty’ (ha ha) and start banging on about how racist it is and that black people can be wife beaters too, it’s not just them white folk. The term Wife Beater… legend has it, originates from around the 1940’s in America when a man in a sleeveless white undershirt got arrested for beating his wife to death. His picture (always wearing this filthy, sweat-stained top) got splashed all over the news reports of the time, inciting people to nick-name it “the Wife Beater top”. Then in the 1980’s, the hit TV show COPS seemed to reinforce things even more. It showed countless stereotypical working-class, fat-gutted, beer-swillin’ white blokes, all wearing their white singlets… whilst being dragged off in handcuffs for assault on their wives or girlfriends.
That’s not to say that all wife beaters wear white singlet tops called Beater tops. And nor does it mean you have to wear a Beater top in order to beat your wife up! Oh god it’s all getting too hard. Let’s move on to Corsets…
So what is a Corset? And more precisely… a Full Back Corset. Corsets have been around, torturing women (and men for a while there) for hundreds of years – as early as the 1500’s. But it wasn’t until 1785 they were given their official name by the French. A garment worn to support the bust and contort the waist into the desired feminine ideal of the time, the Corset has been in and out of fashion ever since. It has only been in recent times, however, that the Corset has been worn on it’s own as Outer wear. This revival garment mimics the classic Corsets by including pretend full lace-up action on the back. Although some may be made of leather, for the use of the Dominatrix crowd… you can rest assured that these Full Back Corset Beater Tops can be beautifully adorned by us mere mortals and are being sold in many appealing colours and fabrics.
Don’t you think it’s amazing that something as ye olde worlde as a Corset could be teamed up with something as recent and as modern as a Beater? But someone thought of it, and now we have an exciting and unique garment called a Full Back Corset Beater top to play with!
