Retro Dress, 50s Dress, Vintage Dress
Wearing this Retro Dress had got her the job – she was sure of it. She felt positive and confident when she walked out the door this morning and that had obviously shone through in the interview just now. It had been a long struggle to get to this place. No, not to this street… although the train trip had been stinky and awful. But to this place - in her head. A long time with a fuzzy brain had numbed her from the world for a long time. She’d lost everything to the drinking. Her job, all her friends, a caring boyfriend… and herself. The bloody drink! But that was then and here she was now…a different person.
But can a pretty Retro dress be this clever? Make her feel so totally alive and strong again? She’d snubbed all her old clothes. They weren’t her anymore. They were all going in the bin! Getting clean had been the hardest part, but she’d made it through and here she was. She went clothes shopping. That’s what normal people do – they go outside, into the street and they go shopping. She’d had no faithful girlfriends left to share the moment, or to offer advice, or to laugh with at the dud try-ons. But she shopped anyway, because she could.
This beautiful retro dress that she wore now; it meant she was back! Her hair, her skin, her smile…all glowed and she looked fresh and alert. Wolf whistles and a “yeah baby” from two men on the other side of the street, gave her an unexpected buzz. Sexist pigs, she thought…as if to bring herself into line again. Can’t get too cocky now, can I. It’s only a dress for god sake.
A special vintage-style retro dress that represented the start of her new life, no less! She decided to pop into a café and have a coffee and something sweet. All by herself. That was something new – she wouldn’t have done that once. The friendly lady serving asked her how she was and seemed genuinely interested in the reply. It was odd… did she know her from somewhere? Then she clicked. Of course - Sarah from their AA group! She apologised for not recognising her and they chatted.
Sarah loved the retro dress. They both complimented each other and they drank coffee together for an hour….and then they hugged. They hugged, and then they cried. They swapped phone numbers and they promised to meet up again. A drink perhaps? They cracked up laughing at the absurdity of it all. A beautiful dress, a job and a new friend – all in one day. Things were zooming along now….Id better remember to breathe, she gasped as she rushed off to the train. And what was that feeling again? She remembered it once…from a long time ago. She smiled smugly as the skirt of her retro dress billowed a little in the breeze. That was it - she felt happy!
