She had worn Pin Up Girl fashion all her life and wondered what all the fuss was about now. To her, wearing 50s vintage-styled clothing, was normal and everyday. To her it had always just felt… right. She certainly never wore jeans or let her midriff show like her friends all did. Or squeezing into lycra mini skirts as tiny as a piece of cheese and then leaping up on stage to writhe around ‘shaking booty’. What slaves to fashion whimsy they were! As soon as the trend of the moment dictated, they would all rush off to shops to keep themselves current and popular.
The Pin Up Girl fashion icon she adored most was the beautiful Audrey Hepburn. And it was uncanny how much she resembled her… without even trying! She’d watched Roman Holiday500 times and had become so inspired that one summer she went to Rome for a holiday of her own. She didn’t meet Gregory Peck though, and came home with a horrendous case of Athletes Foot instead. How annoying, she’d said at the time…but a bit of a reality check.
To see all this Pin Up Girl fashion in the shops now, she felt resentful and cheated. Oh the years of funny looks and token compliments she’d endured. Her friends loved her but didn’t understand her obsession – or why she’d never go shopping with them. What was the point? There was never anything she liked or approved of. She wasn’t a prude – she loved wearing sexy clothes and beautiful things and feeling feminine and pretty. To her, the 1950’s was an era when women were women and they dressed like women. So what was wrong with that?
You couldn’t buy Pin Up Girl fashion ten years ago. She’d taught herself to sew so she could create the perfect Retro outfits. Mind you, it wasn’t called Retro back then – it was just called ‘being different’. She’d whipped up 1950’s Ruffle dresses and Swing dresses made from gorgeous fabrics that cut in at the waist and flared out under her belt. Flattering tubular-shaped pencil skirts that came up high and then hugging her curves, climbed tightly down to her calves.
She’d trawled every Op shop or Salvos store she knew of – it was a treasure trove for old fashioned curtain fabric that could be taken home and converted into something Audrey might have worn.
Pin Up Girl fashion? What was that supposed to mean anyway? It was already her life! But then there were the accessories… She’d seen some online recently, a new range of 1950s vintage-styled clothing that had somehow snuck into contemporary fashion. And without anyone asking her! But she couldn’t deny it – such wonderful hosiery and handbags, pumps, gloves and jewellery. These precious accessories that had once been so hard to find… it was all out there now...waiting for her.
