Pin Up Girl Swimsuit, 50s Pin Up Swimming Costumes
“What about one of these new Pin Up Girl swimsuit things?” An arm appeared through the split in the curtain and waggled itself furiously at me - a hanger with anonymous garment attached. “You know, one of these new old swimsuits they had in the 1950’s…as in Marilyn Munroe. They’re all back in again aren’t they?” Standing in the cupboard-sized cubicle with my top half exposed and my pants down round my ankles I stared at the two piles of swimming costume ‘try-ons’ I’d created. To the left... the one solitary remaining ‘maybe if I lose weight’ contender; and on the right… the mountainous ‘no way Ho-say’ pile. Poor old Dave had been dragged from swimwear shop to glorious swimwear shop and even though he’d done very well up til now…I could tell he was starting to droop.
“Pin Up Girl swimwear is very fashionable this year – Madam should try one on” sang the voice of the shop assistant, “…and very suitable for the woman with curves”. The woman with curves! Did she mean me? I mean, I was no super model but I was hardly Fat Chick material I felt sure of that. Oh get over yourself… I was starting to feel snippity. Time for lunch - I assured Dave that would be our next stop.
The curve-enhancing Pin Up Girl swimsuit waited on the hook in front of me. Vintage-style Bathing Suits it said on the label. I grumbled as I climbed into it, my expectations low. It was a solid, yet pretty one-piece number with its front ruching and halter neck straps. The high waist and built-in belt sucked my stomach in superbly - I nearly squealed with delight as I turned side-on in front of the mirror. The mirror that, up until now, had been my enemy. Dave came rushing in and squealed in unison with me. He threw a pair of black stilettos at me that the sales lady had offered Madam to put on “just for fun”. As I slipped them on it was like a flash back through time…
This Pin Up Girl swimsuit had turned me into some sort of 1950’s sex kitten. No! The Sex Bomb! A glamorous actress…an iconic movie star being adored by her fans… striking a pose for a photo shoot by a famous Hollywood photographer. All of the above! I felt fantastic. Bloody hell, I looked fantastic. “Bring me more”, I bellowed to Dave who raced off to find our new best friend the sales lady. I blew my budget to smithereens that afternoon, and bought three beautiful flattering Pin Up Girl swimsuits. To hell with the rent, I had discovered Retro!
I couldn’t wait to wear my new Pin Up Girl swim suit and teased Dave by threatening to leave it on while we shopped. I imagined myself in that famous Marilyn Munroe movie scene where she straddles the subway vent on the footpath and her skirt balloons up. Lunch would have to wait….I had the sudden urge to buy pearls!
